Without wanting to sound alarmist, it's inevitable that we will see a rise in crime during this recession, particularly domestic burglaries. Sadly, there are some in our communities who believe they can take what they can't afford to buy themselves.
There are a number of things we can do to prevent our homes falling foul of opportunist thieves and, whilst most of these tips will seem obvious to most of us, the vast majority of us won't act until a burglary has taken place. That's a bit like closing the stable doors after the horse has bolted.
First and foremost, it is wise to invest in a quality intruder alarm and make sure it works by testing it regularly. As an added precaution, use your part-set or zone settings to protect you and your family when you are at home.
Make sure you fit robust door locks and add a bolt or security chain for additional protection. Make sure you use them, even when you're at home, as alarmingly, approximately 1 in 8 domestic burglaries occur whilst the occupants are present.
Fit quality window locks to all accessible windows. They are cheap, easy to install and very effective. It's sobering to remember that intruders use windows to gain access to homes in 52% of burglaries.
Leave at least one light on in your house, when you leave in the evening. Use energy saving bulbs to keep the cost down for you and the environment.
Properly secure outbuildings such as garages and sheds, as these often contain valuable items as well as equipment an opportunistic burglar might use to gain forced entry into your home.
Thieves want to avoid being seen at all costs, so install outdoor lighting with movement sensors where possible.
Most important of all, build neighbourly rapport. If you hear your neighbour's alarm, check everything is OK without putting yourself in danger. Co-operation with your neighbours will ensure your that they reciprocate if your alarm should go off.
Don't become a victim of crime when there are many practical and often inexpensive steps you can take to prevent it.
