WEDDING WEAR
Advice for the wedding guest
- what to wear to a spring wedding
You’ve received the invite for your friends’ spring wedding, happily circled the date on your calendar and have started shopping for their gift, when all of a sudden it hits you – what are you going to wear on their special day??
Most couples feel that their guests should be free to dress however they like, but out of their well intended kindness you may feel left in the dark.
The etiquette for proper wedding guest attire can vary greatly depending on the style of the wedding, weather, season and relationship to the bride and groom. If you are a close family member, then you’ll want to dress up a bit. However if you are a casual acquaintance you can get away with dressing slightly more casually.
Some dos and don’ts to achieve that perfect wedding guest look!
Do wear something feminine and appropriate, out of respect for your hosts. Club wear, overtly sexy or revealing clothing don’t belong at a wedding. If you have to ask if it’s appropriate, it probably isn’t!
Do use good judgement if the invitation doesn’t specify the formality of the event. A soft floral or self coloured dress is perfect for daytime and a little black dress with slinky silk fringes for evening (after 6pm) will take you almost anywhere!
Do wear a flirty dress to give a soft and airy atmosphere. The dress can be short, but no higher than one or two inches above the knee. This is a wedding after all. The hot trend this springtime is printed shift, one shoulder dresses in satin, soft ruffled lace and faded flower prints, lavender and soft rose shades!
Do complete your wedding outfit with accessorises. Shoes can be a touch more casual if you like. Toning down a formal outfit with less formal shoes is actually a great way to ensure that your look is appropriate. Extreme heels are on trend this spring season but you need to be comfortable. Floral hair pieces, oversized earrings and statement necklaces are a must!
Don’t wear white because it will compete with the bride. You can get away with a printed dress with a white background, but there are plenty more colours to choose from!
Don’t worry about wearing the same colour as the bridesmaids or mothers. You can’t possibly coordinate with everyone in the wedding party!
Don’t wear black or sequins during the day. However a black and white outfit is acceptable!
Finally, when deciding what to wear to a wedding, let common sense be your guide, but remember wear a comfortable outfit that suits your body shape and you will look absolutely gorgeous!
